Message: Dear Representative Fister, I am writing to you to urge you to vote against SB 59, sponsored by an ill-informed colleague of yours, Senator Boswell. The bill allows the killing of Red-tailed and Cooper’s hawks. This proposal would violate the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918. Senator Boswell is attempting to make this a partisan issue, which couldn’t be farther from the truth. This bill is a danger to all our ecosystems due to the fact that nature has provided predators as a benefit to them to help keep many prey species in check. If predators are eliminated, the ecosystems go wildly out of whack. Additionally, many people couldn’t even identify a Red-tailed or Cooper’s hawk, they would just shoot at any large bird that may conceivably threaten their chickens or other livestock. If we can’t live with nature, we are doomed as a species, as we are designed to be a part of nature. Please vote “no” to this misguided bill!
