FYI. If any of you can join, feel free. Ruffed Grouse have been on
long-term declines for the past few decades, primarily from an overall
aging forest system. However, new information shows West Nile Virus may be
playing a role.

Hello folks,

Heads up on a webinar opportunity I hope you can catch (IN TWO DAYS, btw)
and distribute this to others. It’s on West Nile virus and ruffed grouse in
Pennsylvania. I know the speaker, Lisa Williams, will be informative and
interesting. She’s my counterpart grouse biologist for the PA Game
Commission, who has lead a novel research and outreach campaign on how this
disease affects grouse (ruffed and sage), both clinically and in wild
populations (I’ve attached 2 of their recently published papers). She will
discuss the likely role WNV has played in the regional decline of
Appalachian grouse populations. Just as important (spoiler alert here), I
predict she will head off the obvious question of “what can we do about it”
by emphasizing FOREST HABITAT MANAGEMENT as the most practical, if not
only, counter-attack against West Nile virus. Forest management affects all
of us, and we don’t agree on some things, so serious thought and discussion
will be a necessity when considering its application for wildlife
conservation among competing interest. So, I’m sharing this info in the
spirit of helping ruffed grouse and other species that use its habitat.
