While not technically "bird watching," I wanted to share this info as I am
alarmed to learn of EPA-approved pesticide's effects on both whooping cranes
and bats.   Ceci MitchellThe Far Side Farm

| | Cecilia, The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has approved the
use of a dangerous new herbicide - even though it is toxic to two endangered
species, the Indiana bat and the whooping crane. The EPA even admitted that
whooping cranes will likely eat prey exposed to the herbicide, called Enlist
Duo, which is toxic to the birds. Yet they approved it anyway, despite the fact
that the whooping crane is one of the most endangered animals on the planet!
Sign the Care2 petition urging the EPA to revoke their approval and instead ban
Enlist Duo - let's make sure they hear from at least 2,000 more Care2 members
today! Sadly, the whooping crane was pushed to the brink of extinction
decades ago and conservation efforts have been only somewhat successful. As of
2006, there were only an estimated 338 whooping cranes in the wild. Enlist
Duo has been linked to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, as well as developmental and
reproductive toxicity in humans. And because it is a combination of pesticides,
when farmers use Enlist Duo, they double the amount of chemicals on their land.
These harmful chemicals trickle into the water supply and are carried through
the air by wind, insects and birds. We have to act now before another
dangerous herbicide hits the ground and threatens the survival of the whooping
cranes. Let's convince the EPA to protect the whooping cranes by banning Enlist
Duo! Thank you,
