Sandhill cranes are showing up in Nebraska in staggering numbers in 2024. An
annual bird count is revealing about 5 times the average population. Bethany
Ostrom, a wildlife biologist, just reported: "Another record week! On February
24, we estimated 122,700 + 9,100 sandhill cranes between Chapman and Overton,
Nebraska ... On average, this time of year [week 2 of the annual count], we see

| Smokehouse Creek wildfire now #1 in size, in Texas history |

A cold front pushed through the Texas Panhandle on Monday, bringing high winds.
And that's when the fire started and began to spread. As of this morning, the
Smokehouse Creek fire is only 5% contained. During the day yesterday, the Texas
A&M Forest Service reported that the fire had burned over 1 million acres,
ranking it among the largest of North American wildfires and making it #1 in
Texas history.

Saturday morning's moon near the Scorpion's Crown
|

If you only see one star near the waning moon Saturday morning, that'll be red
Antares, the Scorpion's Heart. But if your sky is darker, you'll also see the
little arc of 3 stars above Antares. These 3 stars are known collectively as
the Crown of the Scorpion. Their names are Acrab, Dschubba and Fang. For more

| Dancing prominences and a sun crown |
| Over the past day, we’ve seen prominences – ropes of solar material and
magnetic fields – dancing all around the sun’s limb (edge). A notable one is
the long-lasting prominence on the sun's south pole, whirling like a dust devil
here on Earth. The sun's western limb appears fiery too, as giant sunspot
region AR3590 – which produced the biggest X flare of the current solar cycle –
