Big thanks to Ethan Newman and John Brunjes with the Ky. Dept. of Fish and
Wildlife Resources for getting word out on the American Flamingo. Word of the
presence of this bird for 2-3 days prior came to Ethan from a local resident
who I am getting the name of to also thank.
It seems that the bird has been hanging in shallow water along the KY shoreline
upstream of the mouth of Sugar Creek, which is at the jct. of US 42 and US 127
in Gallatin County upstream from Warsaw. There is a boat ramp just off US 42 on
the east side of Sugar Creek. A paddle by kayak or canoe would be on the order
of two miles each way to get into the vicinity of where the bird has been.
When first seen this afternoon, the bird was actually in yards of the homes at
the end of Paint Lick Road, off KY 1992. This was a distance of 1.8 miles from
the river overlook at the jct. of US 42 and US 127. After being seen and
photographed there, it flew upstream to another spot on the KY shoreline where
it loafed for the rest of the afternoon (unless someone saw it fly off). This
location was another 0.6 mile upstream from the mouth of Paint Lick Creek.
The KY shoreline at this latter spot was visible from a small boat ramp on the
Indiana side along IN 165 about two miles south of Patriot, IN. If the bird
returns downstream to where it has been foraging, it might be hard to see from
this spot, but it would be visible from about 1.5 miles away at the overlook at
42/127. In any scenario, it might be hard to impossible to see from any access
point on the KY side? ? ?
Travis Young will be back out on the river after 800 in the morning and will
likely be the first to refind the bird if it lingers. Someone will get prompt
word out of any resighting.
