I have been noticing purple finches and goldfinches eating elm seeds here too.
I remember a year or so back that someone on here reported observing evening
grosbeaks eating box elder seeds. My message as always is that native birds
need native plants to sustain themselves. Trees and shrubs that aren’t the
showiest are often the most underrated food sources. If you want to provide
nutritious food for migrants and residents, plant or retain native species in
your yards/acreage.

I have never used the word flock to describe Purple Finches, here, before.
Before the deluge, last evening, there was at least a dozen of them in the
pond thicket. This morning they are back. It took me a bit to figure it out,
but they are shelling and eating the green seeds out of the little
disc-shaped slippery elm fruits. I would not have known that was a thing,
but they seem to be enjoying themselves. Several of them have been singing
occasionally.
