Not even a new day bird, but as Alison and I set out on our afternoon field
walk, a mature Red-tailed Hawk was using a power line up ahead of us as a
hunting perch. There are 12 light poles on our place, an artifact of the early
years of rural electrification. Daddy was among the first to sign up. Some
other local farmers wouldn’t sign a right-of-way, then got spur lines branching
from here when they changed their minds. Hawks have always used pole tops as
hunting perches, but it seems pretty odd to see something that big on the wire.
Further on, what was likely a Barred Owl flew out of a fence row and headed for
a wooded sink hole out in a bean field. As I attempted to see where it landed,
I spotted a male Northern Harrier coursing over the bean field.
