Our feeders, not surprisingly, have been extremely busy and the birds are
demolishing our supply of black oil sunflower seeds. We've seen a few on suet
cakes but not as many as anticipated. We had FOY/FOS fox sparrow, FOS
dark-eyed juncos, and the yard seems to have become a towhee magnet (6 at a
time; the 4 males were splitting time between eating and driving each other to
the spaces under nearby feeders). The neighborhood red-shouldered hawk swooped
through the yard yesterday and sent everyone scattering - they returned very
quickly, much faster than when the neighborhood sharpie/Cooper's make a pass.
I've hoped to see one of them have a successful sweep but no luck in our yard
these last weeks. A brown creeper was in the yard last week and occasionally
in the weeks prior but not this week. A yellow-bellied sapsucker has been
visiting regularly along with large numbers of white-throated sparrows and
house finches.
Hope everyone is staying warm!
