A few weeks ago I heard a starling imitating an Eastern Wood-Peewee in
Taylorsville. As far as mockingbirds go…I always try to listen where the sound
is coming from. Most mockingbirds will sing from the top of a tree. That helps
eliminate the possibility of it being a more ground-dwelling bird. But….that’s
not always the case.

This week I've been hearing some really early arrivals including Eastern
Kingbird and Eastern Wood-Pewee . . . well, sort of, of course. Just this
past week the mockingbirds have begun singing in earnest, and they are
already imitating some birds that have not yet returned. As I was listening
to the "kingbird" yesterday, I wondered how Merlin would treat it? Probably
as a confirmed report as good as the mocker can imitate it! I haven't heard
the Summer Tanager yet, but it is surely just a few days away . . . :-)
Yesterday was actually my first to have Tree Swallows back and awhile ago,
Jamie Baker pointed out the first Barn Swallow to return. We walked around
the big Indian grass field and had at least a dozen Vesper Sparrows.
