This is the first time since my dad passed away that I went birding...Boy what a day! Wes Maddox, and I started at Warix Boat Ramp on KY 801. No Eagles...on to Poppin Rock Boat Ramp 1 Immature, the day was going well. It got much better as we saw a total of 11 birds. The highlight was at Zilpo campground. Lots of duck, grebes and geese in the water. We saw one immature flying up the lake, it was #8 for the day. We drove through the entrance gate on the way out and I happened to see an immature and mature eagle. We were very close, I told Wes it looked like the female that was seen at the nest, suddenly out of nowhere , 2 more 1 mature and 1 immature flushed the two from the trees...4 eagles in the air together. Quite a sight! We had a total of 5 mature, and 6 immature for the day. I was not able to get with Fred Busroe and Lew Korman to get their totals for the other side of the lake. We also saw 9 Red-tail hawks, 1 Red shouldered, 1 American Krestrels and surprisingly along Zilpo Road 3 Red-headed woodpeckers. The woodpeckers were located in the prescribed fire area at the junction of FS 918-A. The first time I have ever seen them along that road. It was a great day!
