I am sitting at the west end of our porch, on the north side of the house,
trying to make the best of the strange, drippy, weather. Last evening’s breeze
was dry and coming from the northeast, promising new things to see in the
morning. But, this morning, I was greeted by a breeze coming directly from the
south and dripping rain showers that aren’t accomplishing anything but fouling
lenses.
A few minutes ago, a downy feather drifted past the porch on the south breeze
and dropped into the grass nearby. I didn’t think anything of it. A few
moments later a clump of downy feathers drifted past, then another and another.
By now I was curious, so I stepped out and looked south along the west wall of
the house and could see more feathers drifting toward me. I eased around to
get a view of the whole of the big post oak tree, in the yard just south of the
house, and found a Cooper’s Hawk busily pulling feathers from a small bird, in
preparation for breakfast. I’m guessing it was one of the House Finches that
frequent our feeders.
