Subject: [birdky] Common Loon Migration

Some of you may remember Lester Doyle, an internationally known DNA scientist
and birder from Bowling Green who now resides in Wisconsin. Lester sent me the
link copied below which shows the migration path of a Common Loon equipped with
a radio transmitter in northern Wisconsin on the breeding grounds. The
animation shows locations where the bird was recorded on the way to its
wintering waters in the gulf. Open the link and click on bird number 55479.
Loons are very powerful flyers and it's amazing how far this bird moved in just
a few days when it was time to migrate.

This bird was recorded on November 24 at Barren Reservoir, and I was there on
this date and recorded 60 Common Loons so probably saw it. The previous day
Tom
Durbin and I observed over 500 Common Loons there which likely represented the
major fall movement of loons through the state. Barren has the distinction of
hosting the largest number of Common Loons recorded in Kentucky on several
dates. It lies directly in the path of the western/central Great Lakes and the
gulf area which many loons use as their wintering waters. Barren also has a
tremendous forage base of shad for the birds to feed on as they "take a night"
in Kentucky.

I hope this is of interest to some,
