Our yearly family reunion has wrapped up. I got the chance Saturday morning to
hit a trail in the back section that I had never walked before; it appeared
that few ever had. The area is a reforestation project started in 2008. It has
a nice scattering of saplings with the rest of the area filled in with
blackberry briars, blooming milkweed, etc. I saw a sprig of golden rod bloomed
in the forest edge.
Birds were plentiful, with nice numbers of white-eyed vireo, towhee, chat,
field sparrow, summer tanager, and orchard oriole singing. To a lesser degree
were buntings and common yellowthroats, (kind of surprising). The surprise find
for me was a redstart male that crossed my path. I had 12 species of warbler
including Cerulean which can be counted on in the cabin area. About 48 species
in all.
After my walk I dug out a shopping bag from the car and went back in about a
half mile for a cobbler worth of blackberries (shorts, no bug spray). On my way
out I came upon a man with the same aspirations, pants duct taped around the
ankles, small bucket on his belt and larger pale setting back in the path. I
made comment that he clearly came prepared for berry picking and he responded
that clearly I did not. I told him I knew the consequences but planned to show
rather quickly, it was the copperheads that I was really worried about. I left
him wide eyed with that thought.
