Low turnout for the CKAS Saturday outing. Just a few diehards braved the
weather. Turned out the roads were OK and the birds were great. We all added
some year birds to our lists. We hit several hot spots around Lexington, the
reservoir by Jacobson Park, Reservoir 4, the causeway between Reservoirs 2&3,
Reservoir 1, Spindletop Research Farm and Berea Road. We ended the day with 66
species. Some of the highlights included 4 species of Geese (missed Snow
Goose), 23 species of waterfowl (including a Pintail in the corn field with the
geese), 5 raptor species including Northern Harriers and Bald Eagles, some
Snipe, large numbers of Horned Larks with a few Lapland Longspurs mixed in
(they came to the road where we put down some cracked corn on Agronomy Rd, just
north of the stream), a good mix of blackbirds including a few Rusties, and a
good mix of our normal winter species. Hope to see more of you out on our next
walk.
