At the end of last week, the three baby Bluebirds in one of our boxes that were
being fed by the lonely male, just vanished. I knew they were nearing their
fledging time, but they were abruptly missing and, over the weekend, a male was
loafing around that area and singing quietly. After seeing the snake in the
wren box, on Monday, it was an easy leap to the conclusion that the young
Bluebirds had become somebody’s dinner. Then, on Thursday evening, I was
shocked and delighted to see three juvenile Bluebirds, around the house, being
tended by a lonely male!
I’ve concluded that last weekend’s singing male was a different bird that was
just taking advantage of the sudden territorial vacancy, while our lonely dad
was away tending to his now-mobile family.
In other news… I was shocked (yes, again) to see a Northern Harrier wing it’s
way past, early this morning. It was obviously a Harrier and definitely on its
way to somewhere else. We occasionally see them here, out-of-season, but
usually it’s later in the summer.
