On January 22, 2016, we got photos of a common grackle that we watched kill and eat a goldfinch.  They were part of the typical mob that collects under the feeders in severe weather.  It was cold, with blowing snow, and the goldfinch just happened to venture too close.  The grackle immediately ate most of it, but carried the remainder away when others got interested in its meal.

Don’t know why it wouldn’t take advantage of a compromised smaller adult bird species.

Desperate times call for desperate measures.  I saw a blue jay carry off hatchling once, but never observed predation on an adult.

Observed a Blue Jay attack, kill, partially consume and carry off the remains of a House Finch a little while ago. On a platform feeder.

I know they're nest predators, but never heard of them taking adult birds. Cornell Birds of the World mentions it, but says it's most often birds stunned by a window strike.

Anyone else ever seen anything like this?
