I’m familiar with the BirdCast looping radar and often look at it, at this
time of year. I hadn’t looked at it yet, last evening, before I glanced at the
MyRadar weather-radar app that I use, which was zoomed out and centered on the
eastern half of the US. It was just after sunset, the app was looping and
there was a distinct green “bloom” that appeared at each radar site, increasing
its intensity, apparently synchronized with the east to west movement of
sunset. Maybe, I haven’t paid attention but I’d never seen this on weather
radar, to this extent; the blooms expanded until they nearly connected. It
occurred to me that I might be seeing birds in migration, so I went to the
BirdCast site and found a nearly identical pattern. I’m still amazed that
there can be enough bird life in the air to cause radar to light up like that!
Today is probably a good day to get out… and I’m heading to work :-)
