On your mention of the tameness of birds in India compared to The United States
- Unfortunately, there is a tradition of shooting lots of other things besides
game animals in The United States, despite the migratory bird act. How else can
one account for the extreme wariness of most birds, especially large birds like
hawks and crows? I’ve had years of interaction with our resident Red-tailed
Hawks. My only progress is that they will usually maintain their perch so long
as I’m neither walking directly toward them or looking directly at them. If I
look directly at them, with or without binoculars, they will almost immediately
quit their perch and go elsewhere, even if I’m far away. Could it merely be
coincidental that a high percentage of rural Kentuckians own high powered
rifles with scopes? I don’t think so. I’m not knocking responsible gun
ownership. I own a gun myself. I don’t much like to kill anything, but I can
and have killed with it. As a for instance, skunks aren’t allowed to burrow
under the foundation of the house. But lets face it. A segment of our society
thinks they deserve more freedom than they’re due, including the freedom to use
anything that moves as target practice.

Just sharing our experience with the KY birding community.
My wife and I spent 10 days in India birding (and also on jungle safaris).
For the first six days, we engaged the guiding services of Mr Rajneesh
Suvarna who is the eBird reviewer for 8 regions in India and has co-authored
a field guide titled “Birds about Delhi”.
We had a wonderful time and saw about 250 species in that short period.
Needless to say, our eBird list has suddenly swelled.
The Happy news is that though a late entrant to the game, birding has surged
over the last 10 yrs in India. It is the fastest growing segment of eBird
Checklists in the world and currently ranks 3rd on that list after USA and
Canada.
A total of 1005 species have been listed from India and we were fortunate to
see a quarter of those in 10 days.
The most surprising thing for us was that we were told that there was no
need for a spotting scope to see water/shorebirds. The reason is astounding.
India does not have a tradition of hunting. Hence for thousands of years,
birds have co-existed with humans. We had the distinct privilege of seeing
hundreds of Storks, Cranes, Shovelers, Gadwalls and numerous other species
from as close as 20-30 feet (often even closer). Let alone a scope, we did
not even need binoculars in most instances!!
The wonders of nature never cease to amaze.
