Yesterday afternoon I decided to check several Johnson Grass edged sinkholes
and a broom sage patch on neighboring farms, hoping to find a Short-eared Owl
roost. Didn't have to tramp around the rim of each sink hole myself. Just had
to get there and wait for Bridge to cover the area for me. No owls, but one
sink hole did have several Cardinals, Song & White-crowned Sparrows. Getting to
the disparate spots I checked required walking across a 160 acre bean stubble
field and a 180 acre wheat field. On my own, I had only a small chance of
flushing Horned Larks. But with Australian Shepherd Bridge along to herd any
moving thing he sees, every Horned Lark in both fields must have passed by me
at least twice. Heard several Longspurs among the scores of Horned Larks. Also
saw 3 Harriers and a couple of Savannah Sparrows.
