I took the day off and birded with my daughter again. I decided to take her to
LBL. She was totally enthralled by all the birds feeding below Barkley Dam.
The pelicans and gulls were a delight to her. A bonus were about 4 osprey that
kept circling low over head, make some nice photos. After spending some time
there, we wet to Scenic Drive looking for warblers. It didn’t disappoint. We
saw several prothonotary, yellow-rump and Parula. A FOS white eyed vireo, red
eyed vireo and yellow throated vireo were very satisfying. There were lots of
BG gnat catchers to be seen, along with all the “regulars.” We saw a couple of
Hermit Thrushes and a couple of ruby crowned kinglets. At the end of the day,
she snapped over 1500 photos.
On the way home, I stopped off at McElroy. The water level had dropped a few
inches, but was still high. The ducks continue to dwindle and the shore birds
are sparse. A few pecks and yellowlegs were all I saw this afternoon. There
was a lone common loon in the middle of the lake.
Oh, I told her about Frank’s Barn Owl. Don’t be surprised Frank if she shows
up wanting a tour!
