This morning I watched an indigo bunting and later a field sparrow having
breakfast. Both had caterpillars that were at least half their body length and
quite plump. They worked their bills along the length of them and turned them
into a mushier version. Then, like someone eating gogurt, they squeezed along
the length with their bills and consumed the goo that came out the end they
pecked open. A chipmunk came along and ate the castoff wrapper from the
indigo’s breakfast; the sparrow flew off to eat its meal in a more secluded
location.
