When I came by the house this afternoon to see if Alison was ready for our
regular afternoon walk, I saw that she had just mopped the kitchen floor, so
instead of tracking through, I sat in a lawn chair and phoned her. Got a photo
of a male hummingbird at the feeder while waiting, but best of all, I looked up
to see 4 Chimney Swifts and 2 Barn Swallows circling directly overhead. Swifts
did not use our chimney at all last year and I was beginning to wonder if we
were going to lose our Barn Swallows this year, since Tree Swallows have been
here long enough to build nests and lay eggs. Alison saw me looking straight up
and from the emotion expressed on my face, she opened the back door and asked,
“What’s happening? You look like your seeing The Second Coming.”
In the only sense that matters to me, I was.
Canada Geese were chilling out on the pond dike as we made our front
field circle.
