Kentucky Birders,

barn owls again this year!  Please help us by reporting information on barn
owls!

Many barn owl pairs already have eggs and a few may have chicks.  However, eggs
can be laid through the summer and fall.  Since most barn owls are on private
land, the extent of our knowledge and ability to help Kentucky's population
depends greatly on reported sightings.  If you discover any new nests or if you
have any updates on barn owl nests or roosts that we have discussed in the
past, please let me know.  For the protection of owls and landowners, exact
nesting locations and landowner information for barn owl nests reported to
KDFWR is strictly confidential and will not be released to the public.
Information collected is used for conservation-based work for the species.  Our
program works to ensure Kentucky's barn owls have safe and permanent nest sites
that are convenient for the landowner. We will be travelling the state for this
purpose April-October.

If you think you've seen a barn owl, but aren't sure, please see KDFWR's owl
identification
webpage<http://fw.ky.gov/Wildlife/Pages/Identifying-Kentucky%27s-Owls.aspx> to
confirm the species of owl you have observed.

We are also collecting dead barn owl specimens to test for possible causes of
decline.  Fresh specimens are preferred, but slightly decomposed specimens are
still useful.  Even if the cause of death is obvious (e.g. collision with
vehicle), the specimen is still useful.   Please notify me ASAP if you find a
dead barn owl so that it may be used for research.
