Besides seeing a Bald Eagle on a roadkill raccoon a few days ago, I saw one
flying over Sunday morning. Then this morning, one flew up from a small copse
of trees by a wet spot about 3/4 mile up Wash Gunn Road from home as we were
taking a morning road walk. I was able to capture it in my field of view before
it disappeared behind a nearby tree line.
Although there has been an additional roadkill raccoon in the same general
vicinity since the one we first saw it on, I feel pretty sure that more than
that is keeping it in the area. I just saw a Facebook post a few days ago about
a 12 year old girl who lives in that vicinity shooting her very first buck. I’d
bet a dollar to a dime that she did not field dress it herself and may not have
saved much from it at all.
A number of others around here hunt deer and frequently make non lethal shots
then don’t track down the deer. A couple of years ago, I found a dead buck on
my farm that had been injured elsewhere and died on my place. Some of its bones
now make up small portions of 3 wood carvings I’ve made since then. One of
them, a curlew with an antler tip for a beak now lives in Colorado. I still
have a Wooly Mammoth with deer ribs for tusks and a woodpecker with part of a
vertebral spine for a beak and can send images if anyone wants to see either.
