This morning before the partially shrouded sun had risen, I spotted a Bald
Eagle flying over our farm. It proceeded in a straight line from SE to NW. I
was checking the cattle at the time and a 500 pound calf approached to within
arm’s length of me as I stood there following the eagle with my binoculars. I’m
glad it was one of the calves and not my 2000 + pound herd sire.
Having begun the day with a bird I’ve only seen on or over this place a very
few times, I decided to file an eBird report after the cattle check and after a
road walk with Alison. Also feeder watched a few minutes after we returned from
out road walk before coming in the house. Got a photo of a White-crowned
Sparrow on my swinging trash can lid feeder. I attempted to give an
explanation for my mixed protocol under comments on eBird. It froze on me and I
couldn’t file a report at all at that time. My mixed protocol comment may not
have been the reason for the freeze up, but just in case, I just now simply put
traveling as protocol and made no explanation about part being incidental and
part being solo.
I’ll add this as something only Preston can reply to. I’m pretty sure Preston
will reply no matter what. Might as well pose him a question. Do you recollect
whether both Wash Bailey Sr & Jr signatures were in both Roaring Well &
Collier’s Cave or was one in one cave and one in the other? I saw a 90 year old
granddaughter of Wash Jr in the library this morning and may not have told her
about that incident quite right. At her age she still writes frequent columns
for out local paper, something she’s done since 1952. If she mentions that, I
want her facts to be right.
