Oh, I'm sorry; that wasn't from Birdcast; sorry. Figured it was one of their
maps.

Here's a map that gives cause for optimism. 😎

As a plain amateur in this birding world, and not much of a counter, I do
realize to see everything one needs to go out nearly everyday here in KY from
mid April to the end of May.
We have been to Magee Marsh, upper Ohio, twice, only two times. Detail records
are published, and we have talked to birders who love that area. To see all 28
Warblers one has to bird the entire month of May to see all of the early, mid
and late Warblers, that's the way it is year after year. And many birders do
that !!
We do realize birds have their own internal calendar, plus BPB's wx
explanation explains the situation well, too.

average # of Grosbeaks, 2 to 4, m and f, each day at our feeders.

We were all scratching our heads at Melco and Garvin Brown the other day,
definitely seemed unprecedented. To lead a trip on April 29th, with 5 warblers
species and 0 thrushes or tanagers, after 5 hours of straining our ears...it
was wild.

Having been birding in KY for more than fifty years and having been outside for
many of the days in the past month, I can say pretty much with certainty that I
do not personally recall such a tardy songbird migration as this year. The warm
March had things going early, but the cool month of April, unfavorable winds,
and lots of precipitation to our south has really put things behind. Yesterday,
I was out with the McCandless/Bell BBC Birdathon crew in the Louisville area .
. . that's May the 4th be with you day . . . and we could only muster 22
species of warblers including only *ONE* Tennessee Warbler and hardly any of
the "peak" migration species (one Cape May, one Blackburnian). In addition, we
did not encounter a *SINGLE* migrant thrush among Veery, Swainson's, and
Gray-cheeked. In fact, the only migrant thrush we had was a single Hermit,
usually gone by most May 4ths. And only one Rose-breasted Grosbeak. This is
finally all about to change, so be ready! Prevailing winds are finally going to
switch around to south this weekend and into early next week; that along with
some unsettled weather should result in what hopefully will be a fallout of
birds that matches in magnitude the scarcity we've experienced the past couple
of weeks. Hopefully the rounds of precipitation will keep some of the birds
around rather than letting them scream right through in a few days. Only caveat
might be the extent of rain to our south, which could keep some of them to our
south.bpb, LouisviilleNOTES TO SUBSCRIBERSWhen posting on BIRDKY, please close
