A great day to be birding! On this January 1 Beckham Bird Club field trip
four observers started early to look for owls. Although the Big Rock (Cherokee
Park) Screech Owl was a no show, two Great Horned Owls near Nettleroth
Sanctuary were a nice find. Traveling to many different areas throughout the
day, the group tallied 46 species.
Sandhill Cranes and a lone Bald Eagle flew overhead while we were walking in
Hays Kennedy Park and Garvin Brown Preserve. Other highlights included 2
Ringed-Necked Ducks, a pair of Hooded Mergansers, a Phoebe, a Red-headed
Woodpecker in Cherokee Park, a Brown Thrasher, Fox and Tree Sparrows at Garvin
Brown. Despite a rather cold start in the morning it was a bright sunny day and
a fun day for the 4 observers.
Happy New Year and good birding in 2016,
