I took this photo in Florida last week just for this occasion:-)
Loggerhead, not northern, but the comparison still works. So much easier to
differentiate when they pose side by side!

photo to it that I realized it wasn’t the shrike after all.

I’d encountered other birder, whom I’d never met before, who said he saw
the shrike on the corner of the fence on his way in (would have been a much
much closer and clearer look from his car on the road). He may have very
well seen it then, but he didn’t put a description or a photo in his ebird
checklist. He saw me further down the road and came down and offered to try
to help me get on the shrike, but both birds we got on together turned out
to be mockers.

So please, if you go looking for it, don’t be like me. Get a good look
and note some features, or get a good photo and don’t make any assumptions
because you’re hurry to be somewhere else.
