Sunday morning coffee, found me watching the final round of a golf
tournament South Africa. I do this to look at the terrain and catch sight
of local flora and fauna as much as anything. While I could not see the
bird, there was a repeated song going on. After 15 minutes or so of going
through a particular person’s video postings of birds in the region, and
hearing the same bird in the background of several videos, I came across a
Speckled Mousebird. While I still didn’t see the bird sing the song, I
assumed that its prominence in the video meant it was that bird’s song.
On a much more local note (actually not as close to home as the fore
mentioned armchair birding). Rhonda and I have found a back entrance to
Jacobson Park while walking a different route through the neighborhood
behind us. Trips on both Saturday and Sunday found limited bird activity
but I did have a winter wren in the marsh area at the back end, and a good
number of Bonaparte’s Gulls on Saturday.
Pre dawn one morning I flushed a house sparrow from a vine on the garage.
My flashlight located the bird hovering over the driveway like a mishandled
puppet bobbing up and down but making little headway in any direction. It
slowing yoyoed it’s way to my overcup oak (thought I was planting a burr)
in the front yard; not sure if my flashlight helped on hindered.
