Our free range chickens preferred laying an egg in a nest that already
contained at least one egg. To encourage them to use the nest boxes, Daddy put
a porcelain door knob in each nest.
I sort of wondered where one would purchase baby chicks nowadays. Didn’t have
to wonder long. Stopped by Tractor Supply yesterday to buy suet. They had
several cattle watering troughs lined with bedding containing scores of baby
chicks. A light bulb in each trough kept them warm. Although I wasn’t the least
bit tempted to buy any, I kind of wondered how one would transport them home
and where they could be put for a night with temps in the 20s.
