Sunday June 7, 3 little Wood Ducks flushed from one of the many cow path
recesses along my pond edge. The mother flew off, then circled and returned. I
believe they hatched in a box I've had by this pond for decades which has never
been used before. Tuesday the 9th I saw them again. This time the mother
flapped ahead of them but didn't go airborne. Thursday the 11th I saw them a
3rd time. This time the mother merely swam from the edge with babies in tow.
Thinking mama duck had grown tolerant of me, I decided I would check them
daily. But they were no where to be seen Friday, Saturday or Sunday. I was sure
something ate them for supper. Then this morning, I saw them on the back field
pond. I had looked 3 other times without seeing them at this pond when I
couldn't find them at the other pond. They must have been hiding under one of
several roses that over hang the edge of this pond. Yes, Joyce Bender, I still
have some multi-flora roses on my place despite grubbing them by the thousands
for the last 40 years.
