There was a lot of enjoyment this past Sunday when Don Carrier, Daryl Owens, Roger Mayhorn, Mike Sanders and Jerry Thornhill birded the Elk Garden area of Russell County and The Cove in Tazewell County. The highlight of the day was finding three Bald Eagles in the Cove area. One was an adult and two were immature birds. The most numerous species, aside from starlings and crows, were American Robins 47, Indigo Buntings 23, Barn Swallows 22, Eastern Meadowlarks 22, and Song Sparrows 20. Some other interesting species found were Red-headed Woodpeckers, Acadian Flycatcher, Eastern Kingbirds, White-eyed and Yellow-throated Vireos, Cedar Waxwings at a nest, Grasshopper Sparrows, both Blue and Rose-breasted Grosbeaks and both Orchard and Baltimore Orioles.
