Great shot Jerry. Glad to see that you are upholding the integrity of both the Russell County and Buchanan County Bird Clubs by examining each individual bird in the flock. Of course the rest of us will be scanning the photo you posted to make sure you didn't let a duck of another species slip past you :) Roger Mayhorn Compton Mt ----- Original Message ----- From: Jerry Thornhill To: bcbirds Sent: Wednesday, November 21, 2012 2:41 PM Subject: [bcbirdclub] OBX Birding Jane & I are at the Outer Banks where we'll celebrate Thanksgiving with our daughter, granddaughter, and son-in-law. We came down early to do a little birding. Unfortunately Pea Island and points south are closed off because of damage from Sandy. It's still been a good week with some good birds especially as you might suspect, waterfowl. Yesterday we went to Matamuskeet NWR where we saw several duck species but no pintails. As Don Carrier will testify, last February, they were plentiful there. This morning, we went to Alligator River NWR. We were studying some sparrows on one side of the road when I turned to the other side and was greeted by this sight. This is only a small part of what we saw. The field they are over is approximately a half mile long and this cloud stretched basically from end to end, and as you can tell, a little higher than this picture shows. As near as we could tell, they were all Northern Pintails. Of course, we examined every bird individually to be as sure as possible, but some may have move as we systemically worked our way from end to end. It was an amazing sight. Jerry
