Hi All,
Thirteen of us made the trip this past week to Magee Marsh and Ottawa National
Wildlife Refuge on the shore of Lake Erie, one of the top birding spots in the
nation. The weather was a bit windy and cool at times, but the birds were
there, though not in as great a number as we have seen in the past. It was an
interesting and enjoyable week with 134 species recorded. (For those who
thought I had 130 species, I miscounted - pleasant surprise).

We saw more Bald Eagles on this trip than in previous years. We also saw a
Peregrine Falcon, a Merlin, an Am. Kestrel, Cooper's Hawks and a Northern
Harrier.

We found twenty-two warbler species: Am. Redstart, Black-and-white,
Blackburnian, Blackpoll, Black-throated Blue, Black-throated Green, Canada,
Cape May, Cerulean, Chestnut-sided, Common Yellowthroat, Kentucky, Magnolia,
Mourning, Northern Parula, Northern Waterthrush, Ovenbird, Palm, Prothonotary,
Tennessee, Wilson's and Yellow.

Seven thrush species: Am. Robin, Eastern Bluebird, Gray-cheeked Thrush (Lynda
and I found that one after everyone else had left), Hermit Thrush, Swainson's
Thrush, Veery and Wood Thrush.

Five swallow species: Purple Martins, Tree Swallows, Barn Swallows, Northern
Rough-winged Swallows and one Cliff Swallow

Seven flycatcher species: Eastern Kingbird, Phoebe and Wood Pewee. Great
Crested Flycatcher, Least Flycatcher, Olive-sided Flycatcher and Willow
Flycatcher.

We recorded both Black-billed and Yellow-billed Cuckoos. Shore and marsh birds
included Marbled Godwit, Sora, Am. Woodcock, Black-bellied Plover, Killdeer,
Semipalmated Plover, Dunlin, Ruddy Turnstones, Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs,
Pectoral Sandpiper, Least Sandpiper, Spotted Sandpiper, Glossy Ibis,
Black-crowned Night Heron, Green Heron, Great Blue Heron, Great and Snowy
Egrets, Am. Coot, Pied-billed Grebe, Hooded Mergansers, Blue-winged Teal, Wood
Ducks and both Trumpeter and Mute Swans.

Sea birds included: Double-crested Cormorant, Caspian Tern, Forster's Tern,
Herring and Ring-billed Gulls.

Don Carrier also found a Ring-necked Pheasant on Tuesday after most everyone
had gone.

Those who were along on the trip were Don Carrier with his son, Christian and
nephew, Coleman, Dan Kendrick, Susan Mayhew, Roger & Lynda Mayhorn, David
Raines, Neil Smith, Steve (Kip) Sweeney, Michelle Talbott and Sheldon & Orpha
Woods.

For those interested the complete trip bird list is at the end of this message.
To those on the trip, if I have left any out let me know so I can add them to
the list.
