Hi All, Here is an e-mail I received a couple of days ago from our Conroe, TX friend, Skip McClellan, and I am a bit tardy in passing it on. Notice the last three sentences. I'm sure the rest of us can't imagine not seeing Goldfinches during spring and summer in their bright yellow plumage. On the other hand, Skip probably gets to see a lot of beautiful birds that we don't get to see here. It is not snowing here, but was freezing this morning early. It will be in the 20's here tomorrow. Your message inspired me to grab the camera and head out back to check the feeders. I was only there for a few minutes but spotted some of my usual residents and several Goldfinch. They are early this year. I normally do not put out my thistle seed feeders until about Feb 1. I put up a small feeder a couple of weeks ago to test activity. A couple of days ago, due to them draining the small feeder, I put up one of the large thistle seed sock feeders. I was surprised to see several Goldfinch this morning. They are still in winter plumage, but I am starting to see more yellow each day. I don't think we ever have the opportunity to see them in full yellow plumage down here. They do not stay long enough. I acutally got the camera out and took a couple of pictures.
