Thanks to Steve Sweeney for sending me the link to this marvelous old book - Gleanings From Nature by J. Warren Jacobs. It is composed of three sections starting in 1898 and continuing into the early 1900's. The first part is about the abnormalities found in wild bird eggs. That part is a bit dry, but by clicking continuously on the down arrow on the right side of the screen you can skip to part 2 which is an interesting account of Jacobs hosting a large colony of Purple Martins in his homemade houses at his Pennsylvania home, and the many problems he had with House Sparrows, then known as English Sparrows, young men and boys with rifles and BB guns and the problem of cats. The third part of the book is an interesting read of the study of nesting Golden-winged Warblers near his home. It is also interesting to hear about the weather events of the time concerning his birds such as a late, wet June cold snap that killed over a hundred of his Purple Martins is a case in point. For those interested here is the link. http://essexpurplemartins.ca/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/Gleanings-from-Nature.pdf Roger Mayhorn Compton Mt
