Dear VSO Chapter Representative,
It's time for the 2015 version of the Rusty Blackbird Spring
Migration Blitz. Please see that this information gets disseminated to
your club's members and encourage them to participate. The basic idea
is to get out and try to find Rusty Blackbirds as they migrate through
your area. Then enter the data into ebird. The process is the same as
it was last year. Directions for doing this are found on the Blitz
site: http://rustyblackbird.org/outreach/migration-blitz/ There's also
information on the site about identifying Rusties and the habitats they
prefer. All this really means is - Go out and bird and enter your data
in ebird. The scientific analysis of that data will be done later by
the professionals who want to have as much information to analyze as we
can give them.
This year there is an emphasis on re-visiting areas that were used
by Rusties last year to see if they have returned to use the same
locales again this year. Our target observation period is now, the month
of March, but I think that our recent cold weather may have slowed the
migratory movement. So please continue to search for Rusties well past
the end of the month and on into May and June.
If you or any of your club's members have questions, I'd be glad to
help with answers. I appreciate your helping the VSO cover the state
search for migrating Rusty Blackbirds. Last year Virginia was one of
the most productive states in generating data from the 2014 Blitz.
Let's see if we can top last year with an even better year in 2015.

Thanks for your help,

Bob Ake
