Couldn't resist the urge to do a little scouting in preparation for Saturday's
birding. Laurel Lake and the Beaver Pond did not produce much due to an
increase in human acticity(mostly fishing). I did locate 2 Pied-billed Grebe on
LL.Robins, Titmouse and Carolina Chickadee were singing everywhere. Blue-headed
Vireo, Yellow-throated and Black-throated green Warblers were found in several
areas. The Garden Hole road and the fisherman's trail that goes upriver were
hotspots for both species of warbler. I was completely amazed by the profusion
of wildflowers in the Garden Hole area. The entire floor of the forest is a
carpet of Spring Beauty with Trout Lillys,Dutchman's Breeches and Giant Trillum
poking up everywhere I turned. We'll probably spend as much time enjoying these
flowers as we will the birds on Saturday. Seriously, the timing for this park
sponsored walk could not be better. The severe weather predicted for Friday
could bring us just about anything this time of year. After completing the park
birding, those that wish can join me, Don and others for a check of the Beaver
Knob area. That area has been known to produce shorebirds during Spring
migration so we could find something interesting. Anyway, pack your lunch and
meet us at the Visitor's Center in Breaks Park at 8:00 AM.

Hope to see you there, DaveR/Breaks,VA
