At our library, we charge students .10 per page to print from our printer.
The money is used for an end-of-the-year scholarship to a graduating
senior. Up until now, students pay in cash or I sell pre-printing cards
they can get punched and use like a "credit card." This has worked well.
However, I have had an issue with students printing out multiple pages
(10-30+) and never retrieving them or accidently printing several pages
they "don't need." These go into the recycle bin and I do not charge for
mistakes and/or sometimes have no way of knowing who printed several pages
and left.
I know in college, we were required to get a plastic card and load money
onto this to print. When we wanted to print, it would take the money
depending on number of pages, so we paid for everything that came out of
the printer, needed/ultimately wanted or not. I am assuming this is
probably an expensive machine, but I am not sure what others do, or if they
have a similar machine in their library. With paper printing declining now,
I am still trying to preserve giving a substantial scholarship to a senior
in need while I still can.
