Dear Colleagues, Award-winning Newbery Medal Katherine Applegate gave an outstanding presentation for our K-4 students today showcasing The One and Only Ivan and the new non-fiction book Ivan: The Remarkable the Story of the Shopping Mall Gorilla. Katherine shared documentary video and photos of Ivan as a baby gorilla on a projection screen. The students were mesmerized as they reacted in a chorus of "Wow..and awes..She really made the book come alive for our students, and she was an inspiration for future young writers... She handled a wide range of grade levels, and the girls were captivated by her research on gorillas. She asked, "How do you communicate with the world?". Soon the gorilla on the screen started beating his chest. She suggested the students pretend to be a gorilla. The girls beat their chests and grunted until they were out of breath. In addition, she really highlighted the creative process of being a writer too! Highly recommend her as an Visiting Author! If you have questions, please feel free to contact me.
