How exciting! I got to do that a few years ago. Flexible space was very
important in our small 6-12th grade library when we remodeled in 2013.
Things that facilitated that were:
* removing circulation desk
* some tables with wheels
* our "Room of Requirement" that can be reconfigured to be a classroom,
conference room, or study room--it also includes a large tv that students
and faculty can project to
* floor outlets and data drops
* comfortable seating
* tables
* study areas
* print/copy station with counter space to collate papers and storage for
supplies for students
* screen and projector in main library with good sound system
* some good display spaces: slat walls at the end of each book stack, some
wall space, counter space
We also needed:
* good lighting
* a new ceiling
* catalog kiosks (we used mini iPads mounted on the wall and countertop)
* an efficient office space (we love our office even though it's now
exactly half the size it was before the remodel)
* proper storage space (we have many cabinets as well as a closet that is
also half the size it was before the remodel, but it's designed to hold
everything we have)
We currently have a main library, an office with closet, and a classroom.
If I had more space, I'd want some small quiet rooms for study and/or
tutoring (designed for 2-4 people) and a room for video recording and
editing. Currently we use the Room of Requirement for those activities.
Two other things you might begin thinking about now are weeding and
moving/storing. There's quite a range between having students box up books
to store in the gym showers (as was originally suggested to me) and having
a hydraulic lift take your stacks intact and store them offsite. In the end
we opted for big wooden library storage carts and storing in the locker
rooms--not the showers;-)
It's fun to dream so be sure to let your students and faculty dream with
you--we used a survey to find out what our kids and adult patrons wanted.
