Police: Men Opened Fire On Undercover Cops LEESBURG, Fla. -- Two men opened fire on a group of undercover officers on Monday, according to the Leesburg Police Department. The officers fired back, but no one was hit.The shooting happened in the area of Tuskegee Street near Beecher Street (see map) , police said.Police said they are searching for the two suspects, who are known drug dealers. Police said the men were in a high drug-trafficking area and were confronted by two officers. During the confrontation, one of the two men exchanged gunfire with the undercover officers; they abandoned their car after crashing through a row of garbage cans at a Leesburg cul-de-sac."Leesburg police detectives, acting in an undercover capacity, approached two suspected drug dealers in a known drug area. At some point in their encounter, the two suspects, one of the two suspects fired shots," said Lt. John Herrell of the Lake County Sheriff's Office.The men were able to escape, but police pursued them until they were cornered in the cul-de-sac."At some point in this encounter, Leesburg police returned fire. We have no information that suggests anyone was hit or injured," Herrell said.During the shootout, the men were able to escape.The car was taken away as evidence and police said it may hold clues to help in the investigation. Officers are also investigating a picture that was found on the dash of the car; investigators are trying to find out of the photo might include one or both of the suspects.The Lake County Sheriff?s Office is also investigating the shooting.
