Richard has been doing interesting stuff with simple but
high-tech equipment from his backyard site.
This group has been producing one of the really good amateur
publications worldwide about double stars. For those interested
in such things, there are also two in English: the British
Webb Society Double Star section circulars (issued annually),
and also the American Journal of Double Star Observations
(issued quarterly):

The latest JDSO has a major start on trawling through the
GAIA2 catalogue to identify the millions of common-motion
pairs that exist in it (compared to ~125,000 systems in the
"official" WDS double-star catalogue). The Austrian amateur
Wilfried Knapp has turned this into a highly automated process.
