DCT telescope operator extraordinaire Andrew Hayslip took a four-color series
of NGC 4565 recently while training a new operator. I've copied the image
here:
ftp://ftp.lowell.edu/pub/bas/Needle.jpg
Nice to see what long exposures and competent image processing can do DCT data.
The colors look "natural" for an image that was taken through photometric
filters. Something looked not quite right, and indeed it's mirror-reversed,
which was fixed by the "Flip Horizontal" command in Photoshop. It must have
been imaged by a system with an odd number of reflections.
Falling off the frame at the bottom is IC 3571, which appears to be a dwarf
elliptical galaxy. By the brightness of the stars and degree of resolution,
I'm guessing that it's at a similar distance as NGC 4565, and possibly a
satellite galaxy.
