Terrence Johnson on NASA TV just said that the CCD's are in a strip array
and optical cables feeds the light from the outside to the strip array of
the CCD. Then they have to stitch the image together line by line. So the
250 square array is just what they stitched together and released as a raw
image. Interesting. Plus, they probably wont release any sharp images for
awhile until the mission scientists get their science out of them. 

Yes, an amazing achievement indeed!
