I have been following the asteroid 783 Nora for the past week, anticipating
its close approach to the bright galaxy M77. This image and movie were made
from images taken from Tempe last night every 20 minutes for six hours.
It's a good demonstration of depth of field. Traveling at the speed of
light, a spacecraft would reach the asteroid in 12 minutes, but it would
take 40 million years to arrive at the galaxy. It would fly by the stars in
this image in the first 100 to 1000 years of the journey.
