Subject: [AZ-Observing] Mercury in SOHO LASCO C3 Frame
Mercury will pass in front of the sun on the 11th. This morning, it entered
the frame of the LASCO C3 coronagraph on the ESA/NASA Solar and Heliospheric
Observatory. The coronagraph blocks the disc of the sun, enabling a view of
its corona. Bright background stars and planets are visible as well.
Mercury is the brightest object at the left edge of the frame, moving
slightly faster to the right than the stars are. All of the other random
flashes are cosmic ray strikes and artifacts. Since the lighting is from the
back, Mercury is presently only 3% illuminated. It will fade quickly during
the next few days.
