Ted, I too was out last night a little after midnight viewing the comet...20 x 80 bino's. I also saw what appeared to be a very bright core...much, much brighter than a few days ago. The very bright core was really a background star nu Columbae...very cool alignment...only 3 arc-minutes from the comet at 12:30 AM 12-27-2014. At transit it was about 30 degrees above my horizon. Transparency was excellent and seeing was fair. My sky is Bortle Class 4 (Typical SQM readings in the 21.3 to 21.4 range). The comet was obvious naked eye. I thought it was easier to see naked eye than M31. The coma is quite large with a very bright center, and is only a little out of round and very mottled-looking. I did not detect the greenish color. The tail is thin and faint (PA about 15). By rocking the scope I could detect the tail as much as 15 arc minutes away. If this comet continues to brighten, we are in for quite a treat.
