I was one of the three hopefuls who decided to try Vekol last Sat. Catherine and I took our pop-up camper down for an overnight. Astronomically, it finally turned out to be a waste of time because of the high clouds and maybe some wildfire smoke. But, the temperature was very pleasant. We arrived about an hour before sunset. There was a light breeze and the day was already cooling off nicely. Measured the temperature at 84 degrees just after sunset. By the time we finally gave up the idea of doing any serious observing and went to bed (about 11pm), the temperature was 78 and it fell to 75 overnight. Distant coyote song and the soft voices of other observers were our lullaby. Sunday morning was lovely and by then, we had the site all to ourselves. Stopped at the Ak-Chin casino for an excellent Sunday brunch on the way home. Despite the lack of clear sky conditions it was a really pleasant night on the desert -- a winner -- not a 100 percent winner, but a winner nevertheless. I'll remember the night fondly when I'm shivering under gorgeously clear skies this winter. John Matthews -- This message is from the AZ-Observing mailing list.
