*Writing a Book Review
By Bruce L. Cook*

*(See our Android App - Reserve Books)*

1. Read the book. This is a normal read, meaning that you need to react as
any reader would. At this point, remain open to anything. While you may
have expected one particular style or treatment, perhaps the author has a
newer and better approach. Take notes on your reactions. (Be aware that
these are just ideas and may well be omitted in your final draft.) Do not
read other, existing reviews of the book!

2. List any sections which particularly moved you. (This could include
positive or negative reactions.)

3. Set the project aside for at least one day before going on.

**4. Scan the book for notable content. Make a note of remarkable or
unremarkable sections.

5. Describe the book’s progression from start to finish. How does the
author resolve the conflict or describe the nonfiction content?

6. For sections that you found to be moving (in Step 1, above), make a note
of the author’s technique in motivating your reaction.

7. Set the project aside for at least one more day.

8. Study the notes you have made above.

9. Prepare an overall comment to use as the start of the review. (I
recommend that you start the review with a compliment.)

10. Select three or more comments to include in your review, and put them
in order.

11. Write the review.

12. Conclude with a sentence that ties back to your opening paragraph.

* *Some Writing Terms Explained
by Ifra Khaliq

*1. Article Writing:

Article writing pertains to essay writing we used to do in school and
college. Like an essay, an article has a title, a body and a
closing/concluding paragraph. The only difference is the use of keywords.

Keywords refer to a single word or a combination of two or more words that
are used in the title name and in the rest of the article as required by
the client. If no instruction is given regarding the usage of keyword or
there is no mentioning of keyword density then 4-5 % is the desirable
keyword density i.e. using the keyword 5 times at different places in an
article. It is a good practice to use the keyword

Once in the title

Once in the introductory paragraph

Once in the closing paragraph

And twice in the body of article

To make your article catchy and to grab the attention of readers, it is
advisable to start the article with a question. Try asking questions from
your readers and adopt a YOU attitude i.e. focus on your readers. Adopting
a conversational tone makes your article even better.

Heading and sub-headings are appreciated and using bullet points make you
article more impressive and clear. Lastly, article must be well researched
and plagiarism free.

2. Web Content Writing:

Instead of adopting conversational tone, a formal and strict tone is
adopted in web content writing. Web content refers to all the content we
see on websites. Interesting your reader into reading your content is the
aim of any good content writer. This can be done only when the writing is
focused of readers. For example, instead of writing "This product can be of
great help in any household" you should write "You can avail many benefits
from this product". You attitude works like magic. Mostly, you are asked to
write web content about certain products. The "About us" page of any
website is a good example of web content. Content written while keeping in
view the keyword density is always appreciated by the client. Well
researched and plagiarism free content is what any client asks for.

3. Ghost Writing:

The word 'ghost' has the meaning of invisible here. Not that the writing is
invisible, it's the writer who is considered invisible in ghost writing.
The term is mostly used when a book/e-book or any written material is
written by a person other than the author. All the freelance writers are
ghost writers i.e. their names are not published along with their written
articles. Ghost writing can be article writing, content writing, technical
or any other writing type as long as the real writer is not known. All
those things that are taken care of in article or content writing should be
taken care of in ghost writing.

4. Academic Writing:

This type of writing demands a great deal of time. Because it is generally
essay papers, thesis and research material, you have to spend a good deal
of your time on research. Citing resources at the end of any academic paper
is a usual practice. Depending upon the requirement of your client, it can
be two, three or any number of resources that you have to cite. Formats
like MLA, APA and Harvard are also sometimes required by a client. Again,
there should be no plagiarism and paper should be well researched. Keywords
are of no importance in academic writings. But this doesn't mean you should
start over-using a certain word. Repetition makes your writing dull and of
poor quality.

5. Technical Writing:

Technical writing refers to the any piece of writing that is aimed to
provide its users with the technical information of a product, say an
iPhone or a printer machine. Technical writer should be aware of technical
terms. It mostly includes manuals, reviews of new launches and know how
articles. Since these are informative articles, the language should be
succinct and instructions should be given in clear and easy to understand
words. Keywords should be taken care of. If you're tech savvy and keep
yourself updated to the new technology, it will be very easy for you to
write a technical article. Otherwise, you need to do a thorough research
before writing the article. Plagiarism is never tolerated.
